Sample Schedule

Switzerland, July 12-22, 2011

Note: This is an example of the type of trip we will be offering. The schedule is designed to be flexible—because we’ve learned that it’s good to respect the ever-changing moods of Mother Nature. If the weather is lousy on the day of a scheduled hike, we can move it a different day and adjust the itinerary as needed.

July 12: Meet your guide at the international airport in Zurich. If you're arriving on an overnight flight from the USA, your guide will meet you at the arrivals after you clear customs. (Look for the guy or gal holding up the sign with your name on it!) If you're arriving by train, car, bicycle or on another flight, we will contact you in June to determine our rendez-vous place and time at the Zurich Airport. We'll then board the train for the trip to Kandersteg. Upon arrival, we'll check into our hostel and have a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

July 13: This is a day to stretch your legs and get over the jet lag. You can test your sense of balance (and fear of heights) at Kandersteg's adventurous High Ropes Park—featuring zip lines and more. We’ll also take a walking tour of the town.

July 14-17: Hikes in the Kandersteg area, plus one free day. One of our scheduled hikes will take us past a spectacular lake called Oeschinensee and up to a mountain hut, where we will spend the night. The free day gives you a chance to hop on the train and explore another part of the country. Or, if you can’t get enough of the trails, you can use the free day to take another hike!

July 18: Thun. (It’s pronounced “Toon,” in case you’re wondering.) We’ll take the train to this charming Swiss lakeside town, where you can spend a few hours exploring a centuries-old castle, doing some shopping or just soaking in the atmosphere. We’ll then take the train to Grindelwald.

July 19-21: Hikes in the Grindelwald area. We’ll have another overnight hike to a hut, plus a day hike in the region whose scenery has been used in James Bond and “Star Wars” movies. You’ll have the option of skipping the day hike to take the train to the famous Jungfraujoch, also known as the top of Europe and the highest railway station on the continent. The trip to the Jungfraujoch costs extra—fair warning: It’s not cheap—but the views are amazing on a clear day.

July 22: Return to Zurich. We’ll supply you with your train ticket back to Zurich to catch your flight home—or wherever your next destination may be. If you have a flight that leaves early on July 23, you might wish to travel to Zurich late on July 22. Accommodations in Zurich would be at your own expense, but we’d be happy to help you find a place to stay.
